Easy Upholstery | A French Settee and Grain Sack Scraps

I have reupholstered my fair share of old furniture over the years, and it can be tedious and time consuming. I love vintage french pieces, but many times I will pass up a lovely chair or sofa, simply because I don't want to tackle the upholstery job.

I've had this sweet little french settee sitting in storage for awhile. I found it several years ago at an estate sale and loved the size, shape, and the carved details in the wood. It's not an antique, it's a reproduction piece, probably from the '70's or '80's. I had plans to change it up with some paint and new upholstery but kept putting it off because I didn't seem to ever find the time to tackle it. We recently had a photo shoot happening at our home, which was very exciting, and it inspired me to get this piece done....and quickly! I use a lot of grain sacks in my upholstery and knew that I wanted to use them for this piece. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough complete grain sacks to do this entire settee. However, I did have a lot of scraps! There had to be a way to utilize all of them!

The first thing I did was do a little whitewash on the frame to bring out the great details, using Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White. Quick and easy to do, just thin the paint a bit with water, paint on, and wipe back off with a damp cloth, leaving the paint down in the crevices of the wood.

Since I needed this project done quickly, I took my leftover scraps of grain sacks and placed them over the top of the old upholstery exactly where I wanted them. And using a glue gun, I glued them onto the old upholstery. Since the old upholstery wouldn't be saved anyway, I wasn't ruining anything.

The end result is a vintage patchwork look! I love the way it turned out and now I won't be walking away from old upholstered furniture because of the time consuming task of reupholstering them! This was simple, and super easy! Normally, it takes me days to complete an upholstery project, but by doing with the glue gun, I finished in just a couple of hours!

I had some vintage burlap sacks that I used for the back and the underneath side of the cushion.

It now fits perfectly at the old farm table in our breakfast room!

I had two complete grain sacks, one fit over the seat cushion perfectly. I inserted a king size pillow in the other one and placed it in the back of the settee.

I love the details to the old bits and pieces of the grain sacks. And just look at the carved details to the frame!
