Re-purposing That Yogurt Container

Why not up-cycle that empty container? You can decide later what the finished piece would be suitable for. I am going to use a few to start tomato and pepper plants in when we get closer to spring.
This is a fairly easy project to do, and you can invite the kids to do one too assuming you have enough containers. True cottage cheese and sour cream container will do just as well.

You will need one or more empty containers; spray paint; acrylic paint and gloss; two or three small brushes an a 2'' flat brush-well worn works best; a water based primer or gesso ; and disposable gloves/optional. Spray painting a container is pretty straight forward, so I will show the basics of using the acrylic paint for this particular project.





almost any brand of acrylic paint will work since you will be base coating the container with a primer. I don't represent these brands either they add color to the back ground. What you will do first is base coat the outside including the lid as seen in the next photo.





The container on the right has been spray painted and will have other things added at a later time. I used Zinsser brand primer on the other container, gesso works just as well. You will want to leave this coating wet for the next step.





For this step I still used the 2'' flat brush and dipped the tip in each color that was applied. You can use whatever colors you like. Start by dabbing on a light amount of color , not working it in, similar to the photo on the left. Next you can blend the colors a little bit more, letting each color show.





Here are some of the other ways you can decorate the outside of the container. Applying the gloss will help secure whatever you have added but is not necessary over spray paint. The blog site is very new, if you happen to go to it for this demonstration you will likely need to locate it in search.
